Eternal Sailor Chibimoon
Series: Sailor Moon Stars
Worn to: Ohayocon 07, Acen 09
Difficulty: 3/5
I knew I wanted to make a Sailor Moon costume one day but I could never decide which one to make. I knew I was too big and too old to do Chibimoon justice but I didn't care!
I made this costume twice: once in 2006 when I was a novice seamstress and again in 2009. I used a KwikSew ice skating pattern that gave me a good head start, though now there are much better patterns available, including Yaya Han's McCalls M7455. The skirt was the only part of the pattern that I modified; I cut a double circle skirt and used a combination of pleating and gathering at the waist. I got the pattern pieces for the bows and sailor collar, as well as all the resin pieces, from the girls in my group but Sparkle Pipsi has a great bow tutorial as well. The boots are just stretch boot covers over a pair of basic heels with ribbon details glued on.
For the wig, I started off with an Innocent wig from Amphigory. Then, I took a second wig (a China Doll, also from Amphigory) and cut it in half down the part. I chopped the pigtails off my curly wig and sewed part of a styrofoam ball to the base where the pigtails used to be. This would ensure that when I added the new, China Doll pigtails, they would have more lift. Next I sewed on the China Doll pieces. The cones were just styrofoam eggs covered in wig fibers taken from the original pigtails. I used a mixture of hot glue and hairspray to keep the fibers in place. They were just sewn/glued on and ended up staying in place really nicely. The little curlies were made with hot glue and the little hair accessories were made using model magic and plastic Christmas ornaments cut down the middle. I also added wefts into the bangs to add some extra volume.
