Doll
Series: Kuroshitsuji
Worn to: Fanime 12, Kumoricon 14
Costume Award: Best Advanced Craftsmanship Individual (Fanime 12)
Difficulty: 2/5
Because of my past experience with making White Rose, the construction process for Doll was very smooth. When making Doll, I held on to her description of the "princess of the circus". I incorporated a lot of feminine fabrics and notions whenever possible, including a lot of lace, crystals, pearls, eyelet trim, and rhinestones. Most of the costume was drafted by me, though I modified a pattern for the bodice.
The skirt is made up of four layers: the hoop skirt, small petticoat, rose skirt and overskirt. All of the flowers on the skirt and the headpiece were hand sewn and embellished with various sized crystals. The bodice is a standard bodice with steel boning in 4 of the panels and laces up the back. Stupidly, the sleeves were probably the most time-consuming part of the costume and include a lot of beaded and scalloped details which sadly no one will ever notice!
The headpiece was made with a white ski cap as a base, which I built up using flowers, crystals and feathers. The feathers are 20" ostrich feathers that I curled using a hair dryer and wire, which is sewn onto the spine. The sash slips over my head and attaches to the skirt via snaps. The garters and collar are a stretch sateen with lace/eyelet and pearl details. The collar closes in the front with tiny flower buttons and button loops.
In the end, all of the details in this costume are very pretty though sadly most of the subtleties will never be visible in pictures.
