Youmacon 2010
6/17/2012
Thursday I met up with Tara after work on Thursday and we were both exhausted from pre-con preparations. Sakura wasn’t finished but I was in such a daze that I didn’t care. I literally threw random things into a suitcase and it was a miracle that everything got to the con in one piece. Megan picked us up and we made the 5 hour drive to Detroit, getting to the hotel around 2AM. Friday Friday we woke up early for Tara’s Dr. Who photoshoot. For those of you who don’t know, Tara designed a full fashion collection based on Dr. Who, which you can see here: She brought her entire collection (in one bag..) to the con and I got to model one of her beautiful dresses. I was a Dalek! I’m really glad she brought her collection because I got to hang out with a lot of really cool girls for a while. After the shoot, I went with Tara and Leonard (who surprised everyone) to the food court to eat some Zoup. The food court was one of the really cool features of the new convention center. Unlike the old Youmacon location, the new venue was overwhelmingly huge. The architect must have had a sense of humor because the convention space is made up of 5 identical circles piled on top of each other with limited hallways leading into and out of the circles. As a cosplayer with uncomfortable shoes, I found that to be pretty annoying. However, the ample resources (packed food court, connected hotel, drug store, cool photo locations, etc.) outweighed the annoyances, IMO. A lot of people I know (myself included) consider Youmacon to be their “baby” con because we’ve been there from the beginning and watched it grow substantially in such a short amount of time. Seeing it in a convention center that size instilled a sense of pride, like watching my child grow up. It was weird. Anyway, it’d be nice to see it back there next year. Friday afternoon, I changed into Rosette from Chrono Crusade. I originally made the costume for Fanime 09 but made it under tight time constraints, which resulted in some sloppy closures, fit, etc. When I found out Chris was cosplaying from CC at Youmacon, I took it as an opportunity to fix up my costume. Although the costume looks similar from a distance, it’s much cleaner on the inside and 100x more durable. It’s just BETTER! Chris and I wandered around and took some photos with Leonard, which resulted in a lot of brilliance and even more stupidity. Something about Chris really brings out the weird in me – thanks friend! I also ran into Ackson who was sporting some REALLY incredible camera equipment. He was nice enough to film me for a minute, though I look SUPER awkward. D: It gives a great view of the con center though. Thanks for introducing me to him, Kerry! Afterward, I hobbled back to the room (those heels are vicious after a while) and changed into some normal clothes. Megan and I went to eat at the food court with some of the “Canadians” (many of whom aren’t actually Canadian but get incorrectly lumped into that category anyway) and I have to say, it was really nice to survive an entire convention without eating french fries. Afterward, we went upstairs to greet our 3 additional roommates, Kenny, Stina and Carlos. Chris and Lindsay were working on their archbishop costumes in their room so I grabbed my Sakura stuff and went to work with them. I worked on the beading until I was content and headed to bed.
Saturday Saturday, I woke up relatively early and changed into Sakura. Even though it took me longer to finish than I expected, I am happy with the finished product. I’m proud of the craftsmanship - my only complaint is that the beads are too small so they don’t show up clearly in photos. It felt really good to finally cosplay Sakura again though. Card Captor Sakura was one of the reasons I got into cosplay in the first place so I’ve always felt attached to her character, even though she is sort of a blob in Tsubasa. Megan cosplayed with me as Fai and Leonard grabbed some photos.
