Chihiro (Sen)
Series: Spirited Away
Worn to: Sakuracon 08, Acen 08, WCS 10, Anime Matsuri 11
Difficulty: 2/5
I have loved Miyazaki movies since I was in elementary school and always wanted to cosplay something from his epic collection. Although cosplaying Chihiro was always looming in the back of my to-do list, I never really had a reason to finally do it until my friend Krystal decided to cosplay Haku.
Krystal did a lot of the heavy lifting on this project: she gave me the fabric from her stash and also drafted the patterns for our pants and tunic. The pants and sleeves are 100% functional - the pants can be gathered up and the sleeves tied back to behave the way they do in the film. Because I didn't want the tunic to be too bulky and wanted to avoid topstitching, many of the edges were painstakingly finished with heat n bond; in hindsight, an completely unnecessary detail. The shoes were a last-minute thrift store find which were originally blue, lace-up sneakers which I painted yellow using acrylic paint and textile medium and attached a mock velcro band to match Chihiro's. The wig (seen in some of the photos) is a Nicole wig from Cosworx which I straightened and cut the bangs.
After bringing this costume to WCS, it is one of my most sentimental costumes because of all the wonderful memories.
